Twin Engine, a company focused on animation planning and production, has formally declared a new sequel project for the anime based on Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun. This announcement coincided with the release of a brief promotional video that presents behind‑the‑scenes footage from the first season.
Even though confirmation of the sequel’s production has been granted, Twin Engine has not yet disclosed specifics on when the new installment will air or what format it will take. This adaptation is based on the original comic by Ikka Matsuki, which first appeared on the Manga ONE app and Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday website.
The manga Nippon Sangoku envisions a future Japan where civilization has collapsed following disasters and corrupt governance. The nation fragments into three warring territories, and a local bureaucrat named Aoteru Misumi strives to reunify the Japanese islands using his intelligence and diplomatic abilities.
The voice cast features seiyu Kensho Ono voicing the lead character Aoteru Misumi. Other prominent seiyu participating include Asami Seto as Saki Higashimachi, Jun Fukuyama as Yoshitsune Asama, Yuichi Nakamura as Yasuaki Kaku, and Megumi Han serving as the narrator.

The opening theme for the first season was performed by Tatsuya Kitani with the song “Hidane”, while the ending theme was sung by Leina with the track “Chikai”. The series streams worldwide on Amazon Prime Video and also airs on select Japanese television channels.
Since its debut in 2021, the comic has earned several industry awards. It was nominated for the 16th Manga Taisho prize in 2023 and ranked among the top titles in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook for male readers.
