The anime director Yuji Yanase, who was helming the currently airing series The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker and The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne, passed away on August 22, 2026 at the age of 59.
The anime’s production committee revealed Yanase’s death on September 2, offering condolences and acknowledging his impact on the series.
“We were shocked by the sudden news of his death. Director Yanase gave his all to bring ‘The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker’ to life, guiding the production team with his enthusiasm and kindness. We appreciate his dedication and send our deepest sympathies.”
MAHO FILM, his employer, announced separately that Yanase died of a heart attack on August 22. The studio said his funeral was a private ceremony, held with only close family, as his relatives requested. The studio also expressed gratitude to fans and everyone who supported Yanase while he was alive.
Yanase directed many anime projects throughout his career. His notable works include By the Grace of the Gods, In the Land of Leadale, If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord, In Another World with My Smartphone, and several others.
His most recent work, The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker, is still in production. This fantasy series centers on Arihito, who is reborn in the Labyrinth Country and adopts the supportive “Rearguard” role, using skills in offense, defense, and healing to aid his companions.
The production committee has not indicated any alterations to the anime’s airing schedule or production timeline, according to its statement.
