TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – A dry lot on Jalan Letnan Harun, Sukamulya Village, Bungursari District, Tasikmalaya City, erupted in flames on Wednesday (2/9/2026). The fire raced through the reeds, consuming roughly 40 square meters of land.

The incident is believed to have started around 10.45 a.m. WIB, with hot conditions and strong winds helping the blaze spread rapidly and become difficult to control. According to a swift assessment by the Tasikmalaya City Fire Department (Damkar), the report was filed with authorities at 10.56 a.m. WIB, prompting Unit 2 to depart two minutes later and arrive at the scene at 11.01 a.m. WIB.

Firefighters moved in immediately, deploying a single Water Supply 05 unit to extinguish the flames. The fire was contained by approximately 11.11 a.m. WIB, followed by verification and cooling procedures.

The reporter, Latip, an officer from the Tasikmalaya City Public Works and Spatial Planning Department (PUTR), initially thought the smoke came from a garbage-burning activity.

“I was sweeping at the time. There was smoke from the trash heap. I assumed it was just smoke, so I kept sweeping the road. Then I looked again and the fire had grown huge, spreading everywhere,” said Latip.

He suspects the blaze started when a cigarette butt was tossed by a driver into the dry area. “It seems someone threw a cigarette butt into the trash heap,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Irwan Hidayat (39), a driver passing nearby, said he saw a plume of smoke approaching from the direction of Indihiang. “Yes, I saw it from Indihiang; there was a cloud of smoke in the sky. I thought someone was burning trash, but there was already a sizable fire,” Irwan reported.

The large flames also caught the eye of other motorists, some of whom slowed down to observe the fire scene. “Other drivers also seemed to be checking it out,” he noted.

A rapid assessment by the Fire Department concluded that the fire likely began when a cigarette butt was discarded into the dry plot, igniting the reeds. Fortunately, the flames did not reach a nearby workshop; that building was among the assets successfully protected by the responders.
