The Summer Hikaru Died (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) is a Japanese manga created by Mokumokuren, who writes and illustrates the series. It debuted on Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace Up website in August 2021 and has been collected into nine volumes as of June 2026. The work led the 2023 Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! ranking for best manga aimed at male readers and received a nomination for the 16th Manga Taisho. Yen Press holds the English licensing rights.
The anime version climbed to the #1 spot on both Netflix Japan’s daily rankings and ABEMA’s anime chart. Produced as a collaboration between CyberAgent and KADOKAWA, the animation was handled by CygamesPictures (now Cypic). Netflix streams the series worldwide.
The two lead characters were previously awarded the 2025 Best Ship or Couple accolade in our annual poll. In the primary AOTY standings, The Summer Hikaru Died placed second, narrowly trailing Takopi’s Original Sin by 0.09%. A second season was announced immediately after the first season’s finale.
