Mayu Maeshima, the vocalist who performed theme songs for series like Re:Zero and Overlord, met Spanish admirers for the first time at Japan Weekend Barcelona on April 11. At the event, she commanded attention with an afternoon concert and later held a signing session.

She launched her anime song career as the inaugural singer of MYTH & ROID in 2015. Following her exit in 2017, she pursued a solo path while still delivering tracks for various anime franchises. At the Barcelona performance, she showcased highlights from her extensive catalog of anisongs.

She began the afternoon set with “STORY,” the theme song for Isekai Ojisan, showcasing her regular work in the isekai genre—something that continued throughout the rest of her performance.

The next track was “Long shot,” which served as both the opening and ending theme for Re:Zero Season 2 Part 2 and marked her first anime song after leaving MYTH & ROID. She didn’t stop there with Re:Zero material; Mayu Maeshima evoked nostalgia by performing “Paradisus-Paradoxum” and “STYX HELIX,” songs originally featured in Re:Zero during her time with MYTH & ROID.

During the performance, she shifted from J-pop ballads—exemplified by “MELTING DAYS,” the ending theme of Isekai Quartet 3 Episode 7—to darker J‑rock tracks like “THE BAN,” created for the 1.5‑year anniversary of The Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden, “True Peak,” the opener for Ishura, and “LOVE OR HATE?”, the theme of Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord.

Her program also featured one of her newest releases, the uplifting “RULER,” which opens Clevatess (2025). In a coincidence, she also sang “Foreshadow,” the theme for the anime’s second season, which is presently airing.

Toward the close of the concert, she delivered “NO MAN’S DAWN,” the ending theme for Overlord Season 4—also a personal favorite of mine. Filled with feeling, she poured every ounce of emotion into the soaring chorus. To finish the Overlord segment, she performed “L.L.L.,” the series’ first ending theme, which is another track from her MYTH & ROID days.

In a final treat for the audience, she ended the afternoon with “BEAUTIFUL,” the opening theme of The Barbarian’s Bride—a song that had only debuted two days earlier. Overwhelmed with feeling, both the performer and the fans bid farewell, looking forward to another show in Spain soon.

Anime music fans should mark their calendars for upcoming Japan Weekend events. The Spanish gathering will return on September 26‑27 at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid, with confirmed performers Machico, May’n, Sayuri Date, Nako Misaki, and Nagisa Aoyama (the latter three belong to the idol group Liella!). Ticket sales are open through the official website.
