While Indonesians know the “45 Spirit” or the never-give-up ethos as a symbol of the nation’s fighting spirit, the Finnish people have a similar concept called sisu. This Finnish term describes a combination of steadfastness, inner courage, and extraordinary perseverance in facing difficult situations.
This character is firmly ingrained in every individual and the entire Finnish society to continuously push beyond the limits of ability so that what seems impossible can still be achieved. This ethos has been proven by Finland’s recognition as one of the countries with a strong education system ranked among the world’s best, very high social security, and low levels of corruption.
Even though the country experiences a long, dark, and extremely cold winter that can trigger depression, Finland is able to survive and even overcome these challenges. This is evidenced by Finland being named the happiest country in the world for nine consecutive years thanks to the collective hard work and mental resilience of its people, aka sisu.
So, what is the true meaning of sisu and how can we apply this philosophy in everyday life to live a more meaningful and happy life?

<p>The term <em>sisu</em> does not have an exact single-word equivalent in other languages. The word <em>sisu</em> comes from the Finnish term “<em>sisus</em>” which means ‘the inside of the stomach’ or ‘the inner part’ in Indonesian, or '<em>guts</em>' in English which can also be understood as '<em>gall</em>'.</p>
In general, sisu describes a combination of steel-like determination, toughness, courage, perseverance, and resilience. Sisu is also a mindset oriented towards action; in other words, people with a sisu spirit prefer to prove it directly through action rather than just words.
According to Emilia Elisabet Lahti, a researcher of sisu from Aalto University in Helsinki, sisu is energy and strong determination when facing difficulties that are far heavier than usual. In other words, sisu starts exactly when the urge to give up appears.

Although the term sisu is difficult to translate literally into other languages, Lahti, through the Psychology Today website, formulated the characteristics of sisu into three main components:
- Determination to keep moving forward to achieve things that others consider impossible
- Tendency to act, and
- Potential reserve strength within oneself that can only be used when the situation becomes extremely difficult
In everyday life, you are a person with a sisu spirit if you have the following habits:
- Accustomed to pushing yourself one step further. Even though it feels heavy and uncomfortable at first, the body and mind will adapt over time.
- Very focused on the initial target and trying hard to achieve it, of course within a positive and non-detrimental framework.
- Draw inspiration from past experiences or previous generations who managed to survive and overcome similar challenges.
- View discomfort as a valuable experience for growth, not as an obstacle.

In order not to have a negative impact on oneself or others, it is also necessary to know some of the negative sides of excessive sisu attitude:
- Very stubborn, refusing to listen to constructive feedback or suggestions from others.
- Difficulty in admitting weakness which can make a person reluctant to acknowledge personal limitations and very difficult to ask for help from others.
- Risk of burnout and prolonged stress because of forcing oneself to keep working beyond physical and mental limits.
- Forcing one’s own standards of perseverance onto others which can sometimes pressure those around and have a negative impact on social relationships.
- Difficulty in letting go.
In order for the sisu philosophy to have a positive impact, the way to apply it is to balance it with compassion, both towards oneself and others. Balanced sisu is not forcing the impossible and knowing when to struggle and when it’s time to stop or switch to a new strategy.
Although the concept originated from Finnish culture, the value of sisu is essentially universal. Anyone can develop sisu to survive and rise above challenging times. However, apply sisu in a balanced way between ambition and personal ability limits.
