Thecuy.com, Jakarta – A large demonstration in front of the DPR/MPR RI building on Thursday, 27 August 2026, demanded faster enactment of the Asset Confiscation Bill, a regulation aimed at seizing assets derived from corrupt practices.

The protest brought together civil society coalitions, students, and regional delegates. Three main groups highlighted their respective agendas: the United Pati Community Alliance (AMPB) stressed the need for swift enactment and transparent management of regional funds; the People’s Movement Alliance for Justice (GERAM) presented ten demands, including strict sanctions for graft, progressive tax rates, reduction of basic prices, and allocation of confiscated assets to education, health, and disaster relief; the Government Programme Supporters Community Volunteers (RMP4) backed the continuation of government programmes and evaluation of the Free Nutrition Meal scheme.

  • Rapid passage of the Asset Confiscation Bill is needed.
  • Imposing the death penalty for corrupt officials is still under discussion.
  • Transparency in the management of regional finances.
  • Progressive taxation for major economic players.
  • Free education and health services funded by confiscated assets.
  • Raising wages for workers and lowering basic prices.
  • Declaring the Sumatra and NTT disasters as national emergencies.
  • Demilitarization and halting the construction of new battalions.
  • Releasing political prisoners.
  • Seizing all corrupt officials’ assets for public benefit.

The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, said the government was ready to discuss the bill with Parliament and aimed to finalize it by the end of December 2026, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive. The Head of the Government Communication Office, Qodari, noted that the regulation awaited parliamentary deliberation following the presidential instruction, and highlighted its role in tackling investment fraud, insurance crimes and misuse of hajj funds.

AMPB said it had reviewed the academic manuscript and the bill’s initial draft, emphasizing the “follow the money” principle as the core mechanism to cut off the economic motives behind corruption. Even though the coalition was unaware of the latest draft being considered by Parliament, it called for public involvement in the legislative process.

The 27 August rally illustrated widespread public frustration with the sluggish anti‑corruption legislation process. If the Asset Confiscation Bill is enacted on schedule, the seized assets could fund crucial social programmes, boost public accountability and send a strong message that corruption will no longer be economically profitable.
