Thecuy.com – The Hyundai Ioniq 5, a South Korean electric vehicle, offers a parallel parking feature, but drivers must use it carefully to avoid technical issues. Extended parallel parking with the transmission in neutral (N) can drain the 12‑volt battery that powers the car’s electrical systems.

The case of influencer Aa Juju highlights the problem: his Hyundai Ioniq 5 suffered a dead battery and could not be started after being parked in parallel for a long time. This occurred because the transmission stayed in neutral, keeping the vehicle’s computer and electronic shifter active and drawing power from the 12‑volt battery.

BRIN’s Head of Transportation Technology Research, Aam Muharam, said the condition can completely empty the small battery if the car remains in neutral and the vehicle’s electrical system is not properly switched off. The official Hyundai Ioniq 5 manual also notes that when the transmission is in neutral and the car is about to be turned off, the Start/Stop button will be in ACC mode, meaning some electronic systems stay on.

Nevertheless, electric cars such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are equipped with a towing or transport mode that allows the vehicle to stay in neutral for specific tasks like towing or transport without noticeably draining the 12‑volt battery. However, this mode is not designed for prolonged parallel parking without engaging the parking brake.

Co‑founder of EVSafe Indonesia, Mahaendra Gofar, added that short‑term parallel parking is usually not a problem because the 12‑volt battery’s power consumption is relatively low. However, leaving the car in neutral for hours or days without the parking brake applied increases the risk of a dead battery, which can prevent the vehicle from starting.

The incident also sparked a debate between the consumer and the Hyundai dealer regarding the explanation of the Ioniq 5’s parallel parking capability. Conflicting information from sales staff and mechanics led to customer dissatisfaction, underscoring the importance for electric‑vehicle owners to consult the official user manual to understand the car’s features and avoid damage from misuse.

In addition, other issues reported by users such as fast‑charging failures and other electronic malfunctions highlight the need for responsive and transparent after‑sales service from manufacturers and dealers. Users are advised to always consult an authorized technician when encountering problems to receive proper handling and avoid further loss.

By understanding the features and limitations of electric‑vehicle technology like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, users can maximize the benefits of their electric car while keeping it in optimal condition and safe to drive.
