Thecuy.com – The fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia and Chairperson of PDI Perjuangan, Megawati Soekarnoputri, sharply criticized large‑scale mining dredging and forest exploitation, which she said only benefited a select few. In her speech at the 81st Independence Day commemoration at the PDIP Party School in South Jakarta on Monday (17/8), Megawati warned of the long‑term risks caused by unplanned natural resource exploitation.

Megawati stated that Indonesia’s mineral and forest wealth should be managed for the broad prosperity of the people, not as a source of personal gain. She expressed concern that if mining dredging practices continued without proper management, future generations would face poverty due to the depletion of natural resources.

The Crucial Role of a Universal Planned Development Blueprint for the 21st Century

Megawati emphasized that Indonesia’s natural resource potential is enormous and must be managed rationally and systematically through the concept of the Universal Planned National Development Blueprint (PPNSB) for the 21st Century. This concept was carefully designed during President Soekarno’s era with contributions from over 600 doctors and experts, but unfortunately it was neglected during the New Order period.

“Our mineral and forest resources could make Indonesia prosperous indeed. This is what we must achieve through a Universal and Planned Development Model for the 21st Century. It was already created by 600 doctors, but during Mr. Harto’s time it was not used, hidden, and discarded,” Megawati said.

Megawati’s Instructions to PDIP

The fifth President of Indonesia also stated that she would instruct all PDIP cadres to fight for the revival of this development concept at the upcoming party congress. This demonstrates the party’s commitment to promoting sustainable natural resource management oriented toward the prosperity of the broader population.

Consequences of Unplanned Natural Resource Exploitation

Greedy exploitation of natural resources without careful planning can cause environmental and social damage that negatively affects people’s lives and the sustainability of those resources themselves. The risk of poverty for future generations serves as an important warning that natural resource management must be carried out with principles of sustainability and social justice.

Fair and sustainable natural resource management is the key to achieving national prosperity and preserving natural heritage for future generations.
