Sinopsis

Yuri Suzuki is just an ordinary junior high school girl. Until one day she is abducted by an evil queen from the past who takes her to the Bronze Age in the Hittite kingdom (1650–1200 BC), Anatolia (present-day Turkey). The evil queen intends to make her a sacrifice for her sinister plan. However, Yuri is rescued by Prince Kail. She now must fight to survive in an unfamiliar era, but will eventually change the course of her destiny forever, as the Hittites believe she is the reincarnation of the goddess Ishtar, who will protect them.

Remember Inuyasha? This anime roughly shares a premise similar to Inuyasha: the adventure of a girl who is thrown into the past and must survive in an alien era. It’s about as close as eleven to twelve to isekai stories, but only time travel, not to another world.

Compared to today’s isekai anime, Red River has a rather slow narrative. Character development, including that of Yuri, the main protagonist, tends to be slow even by the sixth episode. Considering that Red River is a classic manga from 1995 that has just been adapted into an anime in 2026, some viewers, especially younger and modern ones, may need to adjust and have a bit of patience to follow the story.

In terms of animation, unfortunately for the year 2026, Red River’s quality is not outstanding, let’s say disappointing, or at best “B grade,” meaning nothing special. Is this yet another “adjustment” considering the source material itself is already quite old? For sure, if there are #Kaoreaders who like anime with characters that have pointed chins, this anime might be worth a try. Well, in the end, this is again taken from a 90s manga with 90s-style character designs. Perhaps 90s fans can try this anime, just in case they miss the 90s vibe amidst today’s modern era.

Returning to the story, there is one thing that draws quite a bit of attention, perhaps even a bit “disturbing” for some. However, Prince Kail’s character is portrayed as “lecherous” and not hesitant to involve the main character Yuri in several actions and scenes that, seen through a modern lens, could be considered harassment, and believe me this will happen often. Well, in the end we are presented with a prince from more than 3000 years ago, who certainly has moral standards and power dynamics that may be difficult to accept in the modern world.

In the end, Red River may just become “just another anime of the season” that probably won’t be too popular with many people. A great pity considering not a few also miss classic shojo adventure anime like Fushigi Yuugi or Escaflowne. In the end, the “power” of this anime may only appeal to a segment of people who do like or miss anime like that. If you are one of them, just try watching this anime, there’s no harm.

However, this anime still has one appeal that, though perhaps segmented, remains interesting to watch. As mentioned earlier, this anime is set in the civilization of the Hittites from the 12th century BC. For lovers of ancient civilization history, the setting of this anime is certainly an attractive “selling point,” especially since many of the characters in this anime are based on historical figures who once lived, even the main character Yuri herself may be based on Puduhepa, a very influential queen of the Hittites in her time. Moreover, considering this anime is set in the Bronze Age, for #Kaoreaders who are currently fond of the trending film Odyssey and are looking for other films that raise the setting of the Bronze Age, Red River could be a worthwhile choice.

One more thing to reflect on regarding this anime. It should be remembered that the manga Red River was released at a time when anime with up to 50 episodes or more was common. Now in an era where everything is fast, concise, clear, with anime generally only having about 12 episodes, how far will Red River anime itself go? Especially since the manga itself runs up to 28 editions.
