During the game, Thailand took advantage of a Myanmar player’s handball inside the penalty area, leading the Japanese referee to award two penalties that were calmly converted. Even after a VAR review, the official’s decision stayed in Thailand’s favor, securing their progression to the semi‑finals where they will meet Singapore, the side that earlier knocked out Indonesia’s national team.
Nevertheless, Thailand’s triumph was marred by controversy. The Myanmar coach criticized the referee’s decisions as biased toward Thailand, particularly the penalty awards. These accusations followed Myanmar’s inability to advance to the semi‑finals after this outcome. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s national team, which also faced contentious refereeing in their group match against Singapore, failed to progress to the semi‑finals after a 1‑1 draw.
Indonesia took the lead through Ragnar Oratmangoen’s strike, only for Ilhan Fandi to level the score. The Indonesian coach, John Herdman, declined to comment on the Omani referee’s rulings that his side felt were detrimental, such as revoking a red card for a Singapore player and ignoring possible fouls in the penalty area.
On the other hand, Myanmar had shown impressive form earlier with a crushing 7‑2 victory over Laos, boosting their semi‑final hopes. Those aspirations, however, were dashed following their defeat to host Thailand, who played aggressively throughout the match.
As a result, Thailand will meet Singapore in the semi‑finals, while Malaysia, the Group B runner‑up, also stands a chance to go further. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s national team must prepare for the next competition after their exit from the ASEAN Championship 2026.
