<p>When Kwak Dong Yeon was asked what made him join <em>The East Palace</em>, he said, "It all began in 2024, after I finished <em>Queen of Tears</em>. At the closing party, I met Park Joo Yeon, CEO of Showrunners, the production company behind <em>The East Palace</em>."</p>
When he first read the series’ script, Kwak Dong Yeon said he couldn’t picture how he should play the role and was prepared to turn it down.
But then the directors under his agency stepped in and persuaded him. Among the directors, they were people he trusted, and they ultimately got him to join the project. Other challenges of the character he played were exhausting special effects makeup and highly demanding action scenes.
Kwak Dong Yeon said, “We filmed outdoors in the middle of summer, and I had to wear special effects makeup made of rubber prosthetics that covered my entire face from the forehead to the top of my head.”
The makeup made it hard for him to breathe and took about four hours to create his ak-gwi look.
He continued, “They attached prosthetics all over my body, starting from my neck. Even when I tried to make facial expressions, I couldn’t move my face properly, and with contact lenses, I couldn’t see clearly.”
But as filming progressed, Kwak Dong Yeon said he began to get used to it to some extent. Especially because action scenes were a major part of the production, he felt he had to express his body more.
During the interview, Kwak Dong Yeon also mentioned an early scene in The East Palace where the Crown Prince he played walks into a pond.
“For that scene, I personally suggested the detail that it would be better if my character had a nosebleed. There’s something I really want to praise about the The East Palace makeup team.”
The team prepared blood effects with different flavors because they considered that blood would splash around the mouth. That made Kwak Dong Yeon think that the special makeup technology was amazing and a truly eye‑opening experience.
