TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – A lecturer team from Universitas Siliwangi (Unsil) Tasikmalaya conducted a community service activity at the Nusa Indah Posyandu, Kelurahan Tamanjaya, Kecamatan Tamansari, Kota Tasikmalaya, on Thursday (16/7/2026). The event, titled “Psiko-Edukasi to Older Adults on Implementing the DASH Diet and Adherence to Hypertension Medication,” was coordinated by Sri Maywati from the Community Health Study Program, together with team members Wulan Tri Yutanti, Yuni Laferani, Rian Arie Gustaman, and Rahmat from the English Study Program, and also involved two students from the Community Health Study Program.

Sri Maywati, the activity coordinator, said that this community service aims to improve older adults’ understanding of hypertension control by applying the DASH dietary approach and adhering to medication. The initiative was taken because the number of hypertension sufferers continues to rise each year, posing a risk of complications if blood pressure is not controlled.

“One method of controlling blood pressure in hypertension sufferers is through a proper diet known as the DASH diet, which must be understood and applied by those with hypertension,” she said.

According to her, the DASH diet follows a healthy eating pattern that can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, and cancer. The education provided includes increasing vegetable and fruit consumption to 4–5 portions daily, replacing white rice with brown rice, choosing whole‑grain bread, increasing legumes and cereals, and limiting saturated fat, cholesterol, salt, and sugar.

“Some recommended foods in the DASH diet menu include increasing vegetable intake, consuming fruits rich in magnesium and potassium such as bananas as a snack before main meals, for example at 11 a.m. or 5 p.m. Additionally, it is advised to choose low‑fat protein sources such as skinless chicken and low‑fat dairy products like low‑fat yogurt,” she said.

In addition to education on the DASH diet, participants were also taught about the importance of regularly taking hypertension medication, including marking a daily calendar to avoid forgetting. During the activity, the health team from Puskesmas Sangkali also provided blood pressure and blood sugar level examinations for elderly Posyandu participants.
