The Japan Football Association (JFA) has initiated a global talent search program influenced by the BLUE LOCK concept, targeting young athletes with Japanese heritage abroad to integrate them into Japan’s top-tier development system. This project, named JFA × SCO GROUP “FUTURE CAMP based on BLUE LOCK,” will commence in Irvine, California, from August 3 to 6, 2026, marking JFA’s first major overseas scouting effort. Eligible participants include individuals born between 2010 and 2011 with Japanese nationality, at least one Japanese parent, or potential future eligibility. Around 25 selected athletes will undergo training, matches, physical tests, and evaluations led by JFA coaches.
The program partners with the BLUE LOCK franchise, a globally popular manga and anime series created by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura, which has sold over 50 million copies. JFA highlights the franchise’s themes of ambition and competitive excellence as symbolic motivation for the initiative. JFA President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto emphasized that global football trends necessitate identifying talent outside Japan, with plans to expand FUTURE CAMP to Europe, Asia, and other regions. Kaneshiro, the series creator, described the camp as a “real-life BLUE LOCK,” stating it merges his creative efforts with the aspirations of football enthusiasts to form a tangible talent discovery platform.
Applications for the first camp opened on May 11 and will close on June 12, with selections expected by late June. The event will occur at Great Park in Irvine, supported by SCO Group and a JFA coaching team alongside Japan’s U-15 development squad. The BLUE LOCK franchise also includes a live-action film debuting in August and a third-season anime in development.
