Situ Bagendit, salah satu destinasi wisata favorit di Kabupaten Garut, mengalami penurunan daya tarik akibat penutupan permukaannya oleh eceng gondok. Located over an area of 55 hectares, the lake has long been a popular destination for both locals and tourists from other regions. The area offers a variety of activities, including jogging, enjoying boat rides, dining together, taking photos at the observation tower, and exploring the lake using traditional rafts.
Unfortunately, the recent spread of water hyacinth has disrupted the lake’s appeal. In response, the local government has intensified efforts to address this issue. Aam Pathulloh, Head of the Marketing Division at the Garut Tourism and Culture Office (Disparbud), revealed that they have received full support from the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) to tackle the problem. The military has provided ponton ships to remove the excessive water hyacinth, as manual efforts would be nearly impossible to cover the entire lake.
Aam noted that the collaboration has already shown positive results. The weeds that once covered the lake’s surface are gradually being cleared, allowing the original beauty of Situ Bagendit to re-emerge. Once the area is completely clean, the local government plans to organize various events, such as leisure walks and community activities, to revive the tourism atmosphere.
This initiative has also caught the attention of the Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), General TNI Maruli Simanjuntak. He mentioned that approximately 20 hectares, or 35 percent of the lake’s area, has already been cleared. The goal is to free the entire surface from water hyacinth within the next two to three months. To ensure continuity, the TNI AD has left two ponton boats and one conveyor system in place, allowing the cleaning process to continue even after military personnel are redeployed.
The local government emphasized that neglecting Situ Bagendit would be regrettable, considering the significant investment of nearly Rp 100 billion made in the area’s development during President Joko Widodo’s administration.
