Thecuy.com – Indonesia has clinched five gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, exceeding the government’s target. Nevertheless, the President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia), Raja Sapta Oktohari, stressed that this achievement should not lead to premature complacency.

According to Okto, the greater challenge lies in scaling these results across additional sports and sustaining them over time. “The five golds certainly deserve appreciation. However, a more critical question is how these five golds can become ten and how we can broaden the number of sports capable of excelling at the elite level,” he said in Jakarta.

At the 2026 Asian Games, Indonesia concluded the competition with a total of 5 gold, 11 silver, and 23 bronze medals. The five gold medals were obtained from four sports: badminton, weightlifting, sport climbing, and archery.

Okto believes this should serve as a basis for evaluation. The assessment should not only focus on sports that failed to win medals but also dissect the factors that made those four sports successful.

“We must analyze what made them successful, covering development, scouting, competition, coaching, sport science, organizational support, and the ecosystem,” he added.

Raja Sapta Oktohari also indicated that Indonesia actually does not lack potential athletes. Thanks to a sizable population and the existence of schools and sports clubs across different areas, athletic talent is plentiful. Nonetheless, this talent has yet to be completely identified and nurtured in the right disciplines.

“Talent is not exclusive to a single sport. It belongs to Indonesia. If, after testing with a sport‑science approach, an athlete proves better suited to another discipline, why be afraid to transfer them?” Okto clarified.

He also advocated for a more data‑driven talent‑identification system, including the development of a cross‑sport talent concept. In his view, athletes should not be confined to one sport if mapping indicates greater potential in another.

Okto underscored that elite athlete development requires continuity ranging from coaching, competition, sport science, nutrition, facilities, to sports medicine. He urged Indonesia to be more assertive in setting priority sports, “We don’t have to win in every sport, but we must know which sports we should win.”
