South Korean director Na Hong-jin returns with an ambitious project titled Hope, a sci-fi thriller hailed as one of the biggest productions in Korean cinematic history.
The film captures attention for its staggering production cost of roughly 70 billion won (approximately Rp915.9 billion). Hope stands as Na Hong-jin’s newest venture following the success of The Wailing (2016).
After nearly a decade without releasing a feature film, the director returns with a story that blends action, mystery, thriller and sci-fi elements on an even larger scale.
Thriller, Monster and Human Conflict: Combined Forces

The film is set in a remote village called Hope Harbor near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The story starts when locals discover mysterious animal carcasses, which escalates into an investigation of an alien presence threatening the community.
Hope boasts a stellar cast including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell. The inclusion of international actors reflects Na Hong-jin’s ambition to bring Korean cinema to a global production scale.
With its massive budget, Hope sets high expectations for the Korean film industry. The film also garnered international attention after screening at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, becoming a widely discussed work thanks to its unique sci-fi concept.
Through Hope, Na Hong-jin aims to push creative boundaries by presenting a larger world, more intricate conflicts, and a genre blend that is rarely explored in Korean cinema.
