CIAMIS, Thecuy.com – Galendo is a legendary signature dish of Ciamis Regency, emerging due to the abundance of coconut resources. This cuisine, made from coconut cream residue, holds not only economic value but also forms part of Ciamis cultural heritage.

Galendo has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB). As a result, its development continues to be promoted through product innovation, strengthening legality, improving packaging, and expanding digital marketing.

The Head of the Cooperative, Small and Medium Enterprises, Trade and Industry Service (DKUKMPP) of Ciamis Regency, Dadan Wiadi, stated that the traditional food galendo is a cultural legacy stemming from the abundant natural resources in Ciamis Regency.

The abundance of coconut trees in Ciamis, he said, is linked to the history during the tenure of the Regent of Galuh (Ciamis), Raden Adipati Aria Kusumadiningrat. In his administration from 1839 to 1886, there was a mandate for every citizen to simultaneously plant coconut trees in the Tatar Galuh region.

“According to historical records, galendo’s popularity began during the rule of Regent Galuh Kusumadiningrat. At that time, Ciamis was the largest coconut center in West Java,” he told radar on Sunday (30/8/2026).

“Due to the abundance of coconut raw materials, the Ciamis people initially produced coconut oil independently. The oil separation process produced a residue called galendo, which has a savory flavor and high nutritional value,” he added.

He opined that the presence of galendo demonstrates that the Ciamis community has long possessed creativity in transforming local resources into economically valuable products.

“Initially, coconut oil residue was considered waste, but it turned out to have economic value,” he stated.

The economic value is the reason why the Ciamis Regency Government continues to encourage galendo artisans to innovate and expand their market. This effort is deemed crucial for galendo to remain relevant, appeal to younger generations, and compete with other culinary products.

“To ensure galendo is accepted by various groups, every artisan is trained to create product innovations without abandoning its original identity. This way, the snack can endure and remain a flagship specialty of Ciamis Regency MSMEs, such as galendo brownies, galendo chocolate, and other galendo-based creations,” he said.
