Oni Press will launch A Ghost Arm Made of Angry Ghosts, a fresh graphic novel penned by writer and colorist Oliver Mertz and illustrated by Alex Diotto, on September 2, 2026. Before that, we’re sharing an exclusive snippet from the work.
Set amid the 1990s Washington, D.C. punk underground, the tale centers on teenager Ari Ackerman following a possible murder he sees. While trying to piece together the events, Ari also confronts his ailing father’s repeated near‑deaths and resurrections.
His closest friend, Maya Meng, prefers hanging out with Ari to catch Jawbox at the Black Cat, yet a series of odd fatalities drags them into a puzzle filled with superheroes and strange happenings.
Mertz says the graphic novel mirrors his own upbringing amid Washington, D.C.’s punk circles:
“I came of age in the ’90s, attending shows by bands such as Fugazi, Jawbox, and Monorchid in intimate venues throughout the D.C. area. When I began drafting A Ghost Arm Made of Angry Ghosts, I intended it as a tribute to that era and locale. As the writing unfolded, the narrative grew increasingly strange, and the more bizarre it became, the more genuine and emotionally raw it felt.
Diotto also resonated with the characters and the punk aesthetic, observing that the story’s growing oddities added to its charm during the collaboration.
A Ghost Arm Made of Angry Ghosts is penned and colored by Oliver Mertz, with illustrations by Alex Diotto. It hits shelves on September 2, 2026.
