On the 12th of Rabiul Awal each year, Muslims commemorate it as the birth date of Prophet Muhammad, commonly known as Mawlid Nabi. This year, Prophet Muhammad’s Mawlid falls on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

In addition to increasing worship during this meaningful month, we also need to understand and apply the example set by Prophet Muhammad during his lifetime.

What character traits of Prophet Muhammad can we emulate in today’s modern era, which we might often overlook? Here are the details!

1. Tetap Sabar dan Tenang saat Dihantam Cobaan

This characteristic is evident when Prophet Muhammad faced relentless injustice from the Quraysh in Mecca. He was spat upon, pelted with filth, and tested in his faith to worship idols.

At that time, Prophet Muhammad was spat upon by Uqbah bin Abi Muaith upon the instruction of Uqbah’s companion, Ubay bin Khalaf. Ubay urged Uqbah to spit on the Prophet as proof that Ubay had not truly embraced Islam after rumors spread of him reciting the Shahada.

Additionally, the Prophet was showered with filth by Uqbah while he was praying, landing directly on his head.

To avoid conflict with the Quraysh, three Quraysh leaders—Umayyah bin Khalaf, Al‑Walid bin Mughirah, and Aswad bin Abdul Muthalib—asked Prophet Muhammad to worship their gods, and vice versa.

However, Prophet Muhammad refused, a stance reinforced by the revelation of Surah Al‑Kafirun, which underscores the distinction between Islamic and other faiths.

Despite continual oppression, Prophet Muhammad remained silent and calm, not retaliating against the Quraysh’s hostile behavior.

The Prophet’s response reminds us that we need not repay malice with malice. Those who intend to bring us down will ultimately tire themselves out.

According to psychiatrist Dr. Santi Yuliani, M.Sc., Sp.KJ., responding to toxic people only prolongs conflict, drains emotional energy, and diminishes integrity and self‑image.

“By staying calm and not retaliating, you demonstrate maturity, preserve inner peace, and avoid getting drawn into unnecessary drama,” Dr. Santi said, as posted on her Instagram, @santi_psychiatrist.

2. Ikhtiar, Ikhlas, dan Berserah Diri pada Allah Swt.

The Prophet never gave up hope and continuously surrendered to Allah, even as he faced continuous rejection while spreading Islam.

The Prophet and his followers were once boycotted by the Quraysh, forcing them into exile in the valley of Abu Thalib for three years. During this exile, they endured extreme hunger, with some of them succumbing to death.

The Quraysh imposed a complete embargo, prohibiting people from selling goods and sending food supplies to the valley.

Hisyam bin Amr frequently sent food supplies and approached four Quraysh leaders—Zuhair bin Umayyah, Muth’im bin ‘Adi, Abul Bakhtari bin Hisyam, and Zam’ah bin Aswad—to collectively tear up and annul the unjust agreement.

Because the treaty inscription at the Kaaba had been damaged by termites, the embargo came to an end.

Once again, the Prophet emphasized that no matter how difficult the circumstances, if we continue to strive and surrender to Allah, there will always be the best solution at the right time.

3. Memaafkan Orang Lain dengan Lapang Dada

This example is evident when the Prophet faced fierce rejection from the people of Thaif during his preaching mission. They cruelly pelted his feet with stones at every step.

After encountering numerous rejections, the Prophet left the city of Thaif and stopped by a date palm tree, where he prayed about his experiences and was visited by the angel Jibril.

Jibril informed him that Allah had dispatched the angel of the mountains to instantly devastate those who had harmed the Prophet, should the Prophet desire such action.

This was narrated directly by the Prophet in a hadith recorded by Al‑Bukhari and Muslim, as reported by NU Online.

‘Jibril said, “Allah hears everything your people said to you and how they responded to you. Now Allah has sent the angel of the mountains to you, under your command. If you wish, he can crush those people between the two mountains.”’ The angel of the mountains then called me, greeted me, and said, “Muhammad, it is up to you. If you want, I will crush them between the two mountains.” HR Al-Bukhari dan Muslim.

But what was the Prophet’s response? He refused to take revenge. Instead of giving in to anger and seeking vengeance, he chose to forgive the people of Thaif who had acted harshly, with an open heart.

He even said, “I pray that from the offspring of the people of Thaif, Allah will create those who worship Him alone, without associating partners with Him.”

These three examples of Prophet Muhammad’s conduct can be applied to our daily lives. While they may sound classical, not everyone truly practices them well.
