Thecuy.com, New York — The New York Islanders have officially inked Malte Gustafsson, their first pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, to a three‑year entry‑level contract. The move confirms the defenseman’s plan to spend another season in Sweden before joining the Islanders’ organization.
Gustafsson, chosen 13th overall, agreed to extend his deal with HV71 in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) last May. As a result, he will continue playing for HV71 next season before possibly moving to North America at the end of the SHL campaign.
This mirrors the path taken by his Islander teammate Victor Eklund. Eklund, a first‑round pick in 2025, also signed an entry‑level contract and spent another season with Djurgårdens IF in the SHL before moving to AHL Bridgeport and making his NHL debut last season.
Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello said he was pleased to secure Gustafsson with a professional contract. “Malte is an intelligent, physical defenseman with solid two‑way skills. We believe an extra season in Sweden will help him mature before he competes in the NHL,” he stated in an official release.
Standing 193 cm tall and weighing 92 kg, Gustafsson is known as a stay‑at‑home defenseman. Last season he posted three assists in 27 SHL games for HV71, plus four goals and eight assists in 19 games for HV71’s junior team.
Gustafsson’s entry‑level deal totals $3.23 million, with an average annual salary of $1.575 million. If he plays fewer than 10 NHL games next season, the contract will automatically roll over, making the first year of a new contract effective in the 2027‑2028 season.
Islanders head coach Peter DeBoer praised Gustafsson’s development camp performance. “He lived up to his reputation. His confidence grew throughout practices and games. He’s mature for his age,” DeBoer said.
With the agreement, the Islanders have locked up one of their top defensive prospects for the future. Gustafsson’s next step is to prove himself in the SHL before vying for a spot on the Islanders’ blue line.
