A 25-year-old female nurse in India succumbed to the Nipah virus after being in critical condition. She was among two confirmed cases in eastern India. According to local health officials, her death resulted from a cardiac arrest while she was in a critical state. “The woman, who was in critical condition, passed away due to a heart attack,” stated a regional health secretary, as reported by The Sun.

This incident occurred days after a woman in Bangladesh also died from the same virus. The female nurse had been using life-support equipment since early January before her demise. She and a 27-year-old male colleague from the same hospital initially experienced fever in December 2025. Their symptoms worsened rapidly, leading to severe headaches, confusion, and loss of consciousness before hospitalization. Fortunately, the male nurse recovered and was discharged.

The Nipah virus has a mortality rate of 40-75%, far exceeding that of COVID-19. However, experts note its potential for localized outbreaks remains low due to limited human-to-human transmission. A researcher from East Anglia University emphasized that while the virus is dangerous, its spread is unlikely to trigger a global crisis. “The reproduction number (R0) is below 1.0, suggesting restricted transmission, but mutations could alter this,” he warned. “Additionally, the long incubation period complicates border surveillance.”

This case highlights the urgency of addressing emerging viral threats. The Nipah virus continues to challenge public health systems, demanding swift action and research to prevent future outbreaks. Early detection and preparedness remain critical in mitigating its impact.
