Chie Shinohara’s beloved historical fantasy manga Red River is set to debut as a TV anime series this summer. A preview image has been shared alongside details about the main production team and a fresh artwork by the original creator.
First serialized in Shogakukan’s Shojo Comic from 1995 to 2002, the manga has achieved a circulation of over 20 million copies, including digital formats. It earned the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shojo division and inspired a Takarazuka Revue stage play in 2018. The English version is managed by VIZ Media.
The anime project is led by Tatsunoko Production, with a team featuring director Kosuke Kobayashi, series composer Yoriko Tomita, character designer Kenji Fujisaki, and historical consultants Kimiyoshi Matsumura and Daisuke Yoshida from the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology. Shinohara herself remains the story’s creator.
Shinohara, whose birthday aligned with the announcement, expressed excitement about the long-awaited adaptation. She highlighted that 24 years had passed since the manga concluded and thanked supporters for keeping the story relevant. To celebrate, she designed a special illustration for the project.
VIZ Media summarized the plot: Yuri, a modern teenager, is mysteriously sent to ancient Anatolia by Nakia, the ruthless Hittite queen. Prince Kail, Nakia’s son, rescues her, unintentionally earning Yuri reverence as the reincarnation of the war goddess Ishtar among Anatolian people.
This marks the inaugural TV adaptation of Shinohara’s work. Further announcements about the cast and premiere dates are pending.
