WhatsApp provides a backup feature to save user data. On Android and PC, backup files are stored in Google Drive, while on iPhones, they are saved to iCloud.
Interestingly, WhatsApp on Android also saves local backups in the phone’s internal memory, typically done automatically every night. Users can adjust the backup frequency: daily, weekly, monthly, or not at all.
This backup is crucial, especially when switching devices or accidentally losing important messages.
To view WhatsApp backup files:
Via PC:
- Open the Google Drive website through a browser
- Click on Storage/Storage
- Select the Backup/Backup menu
- The WhatsApp backup files will appear
Via Mobile Phone:
- Open the Google Drive app
- Click the menu icon (three lines) in the top left corner
- Select Backup/Backup
- The backup files will be visible
Note that only the most recent backup is stored in the cloud. Once a new backup is created, the older version is automatically deleted. Local backups on Android devices usually last for a few days.
To recover lost WhatsApp messages:
- Uninstall the WhatsApp app from the device
- Reinstall WhatsApp from Google Play or the App Store
- When prompted, click Restore/Restore to retrieve messages from the latest backup
- The recovery process will proceed automatically
If you skip the recovery step, the data cannot be restored.
Important note: this method only works for messages deleted after the last backup and before the next one. For example, if backups are done daily at 2:00 AM, messages deleted after that time can still be recovered until the next backup is created.
Regular backups can be a lifesaver in unexpected situations. Make sure this feature is enabled in your WhatsApp settings!
