Based on Entertainment Weekly’s report, James Gunn has declared that the Wonder Woman DCU movie is now officially entering the development phase.
Wonder Woman had previously grabbed many viewers’ attention when she first appeared in the DCEU. However, its sequel, titled Wonder Woman 1984, received mixed feedback.
Additionally, the character Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, also appears in the Justice League movie and has made appearances in several other DC films, including a cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
The existence of Wonder Woman became a rather hot topic when James Gunn took over leadership of DC Studios as CEO in 2022.
As soon as Gunn and Peter Safran assumed their roles, a number of projects involving DC characters were canceled. All plans underwent major changes, including one that impacted the development of Wonder Woman 3.
This recent news gives hope after Wonder Woman’s journey faced ups and downs on the big screen in recent years.
Wonder Woman DCU Project: Slow but Surely
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed they are working on the Wonder Woman project methodically and steadily.
“[Wonder Woman] is moving slowly, yet surely progressing. We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is being written right now,” James Gunn told EW.
In his interview, Gunn also disclosed the latest Wonder Woman movie will be standalone, separate from the Paradise Lost HBO Max series.
This series will explore life in Themyscira, the home of the Amazons, and according to Gunn, will resemble the atmosphere of Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, for the Wonder Woman film, there are no official details yet regarding who will write the script or direct the film.
Considering how iconic Wonder Woman is and her position as part of the iconic DC Trinity along with Superman and Batman, this latest film release is undoubtedly a smart move to reignite fans’ enthusiasm.
“Currently, there are four characters we consider extremely significant: Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. I’m not saying they are the only ones relevant, but their presence is crucial in our long-term plan. For now, I feel positive about two characters among them and in the development phase for the other two.”
Unfortunately, to date, there is no news about the release date of this movie or who will assume the role of Wonder Woman in the new version. Likely, Gal Gadot, who previously donned the superhero costume, will be replaced, similar to what happened to Henry Cavill who played Superman and Ben Affleck who played Batman.
